Commonly Asked Questions

WHY WAS MY CAR TOWED?

Cars are towed for many reasons. Below you will find many of the most common reasons that vehicles get towed and the corresponding vehicle codes:

22651 (p) CVC and/or 14602.6 CVC

THE DRIVER IS UNLICENSED or HAS A SUSPENDED LICENSE

Vehicles will be towed immediately if the driver is driving on a suspended license or has no license. This is true even if the driver is not the vehicle owner or there is a licensed passenger in the car.

22651 (h) (1) CVC or 22651 (h) (2) CVC

DRIVER or OCCUPANT ARRESTED

If the driver or occupant of a vehicle is arrested, the vehicle may be towed immediately. This includes driving under the influence and driving under the influence under the age of 21.

22651 (a), (b), (d), CVC

LEFT BLOCKING ROADWAY, SIDEWALK OR DRIVEWAY

Vehicles cannot block a street, lane of traffic, driveway, sidewalk, any other vehicle or any public right-of-way. Obstructing vehicles will be towed.

REGISTRATION EXPIRED OVER 6 (SIX) MONTHS

Any vehicle, registered in any state, found or operated on any roadway, public lands, or parking lot with the registration expired in excess of six months will be towed.

22651 (n) (l) (j) CVC and 22652 CVC

ILLEGALLY PARKED VEHICLES

Vehicles parked unsafely, or with expired registration will be towed immediately. Vehicles parked in the Fire Lane, Construction Zone, Fire Hydrant, Bus Zone, Handicapped parking space, or other signed No Parking Zones will be towed immediately.

Vehicles can be towed for a car alarm sounding over a 20 minute period.

DISABLED OR DISMANTLED VEHICLES

Vehicles in unsafe condition or unable to be driven or moved under their own power (I.e.; missing wheels, engine, windshield, etc.) can be towed away immediately.

22551 (k) CVC and 22660 CVC

ABANDONED OR ABATED VEHICLES

Any vehicle seen as abandoned or parked motionless on any public street may be marked as such and towed after 72 hours (3 days) if not moved.

22655.5 CVC

EVIDENCE OR USED IN A CRIME

Any vehicle used in a crime or containing evidence of a crime will be impounded and towed immediately.

22651 (i) CVC

EXCESSIVE PARKING VIOLATIONS

Vehicles found with 5 (five) or more unpaid parking citations from any government agency can be towed at any time.

22658 (a) CVC

PARKED WITHOUT AUTHORIZATION, OR BLOCKING ON PRIVATE PROPERTY

Vehicles parked on private property without authorization or permission, or blocking entrance or exit can be towed. Private property must have specific signs at the property entrances.

HOW DO I GET MY CAR BACK?

If you vehicle was towed because you were involved in an accident in the California Highway Patrol jurisdiction, you will need the following documents to retrieve your car:

  •      Valid ID
  •      Current Registration/title in your name

If your vehicle was towed by the California Highway Patrol because of a vehicle code violation, you must first go to the issuing CHP office at:

You will obtain a release form from the CHP front desk and bring the release to our office.

If your vehicle was towed for any other reason, you do not need a release. You must bring Valid ID and current registration/title in your name to our office to retrieve your vehicle.
